Prologue to the Utena Manga

A sudden out burst in a quite hallway "Tenjou Utena...Wait!
Wearing that uniform is against school regulations.
Wait, Utena? Utena!" The teacher suddenly grabs the arm
of a pinked haired girl, who seems to be dressed in an altered boy's uniform.
The girl, who we know as Utena, explains that she wears it because
it suits her personality better, as well as keeps boys from looking at her undies.
Utena comments that they should just punish her any way they see fit,
of course the teacher decides to call her guardian. Of course, that's the
one thing Utena did NOT want them to do.

Moments later after Utena's Aunt, Yurika, shows up as Utena waits
in the hallway. Utena is approached by her friend Kaido, a young
man with glasses that comments that he thinks that her uniform is great.
Utena sits in wonder as she tries to find away to get out of trouble,
then her Aunt sends her home, as she talks with the teachers.
The teachers are are disturbed by what Yurika did, But then
Yurika explains Utena to them. "I know she causes problems
by being a bit different. It's my fault for not raising her right.
I spoiled her. Utena lost her parents when she was six, but I was young
too, and didn't know how to tell her. I said, with tears in my eyes, "
Utena, now your mommy and daddy have gone far away..."
and then Utena said, "Don't cry. Until mommy and daddy come back,
I'll be with you in their place." After that, she never made me cry or show
any tears by asking about her parents again. So that girl, Utena..."

Next we see Utena taking the quick way home as Kaido complains.
Utena then notices she has gotten a letter with the crest of a rose,
as she does every year. Kaido questions her later about 6 other letters
she has and her ring, how they all have the same crest. She comments
it's from the man she loves, her Prince. She then tells Kaido that
when she was dead, and realized her parents where not coming back,
she went for a long walk before she accidentally fell into some rushing water.
Suddenly, she is saved from falling in and surrounded by a sent of roses,
and in the arms of a tall, dark, handsome man who tells her that everything is alright.
He says that he will give her strength to live on, as long as she keeps her noble ways.
Utena, never hearing the word "noble" before, is amazed by this person, who
she happily calls Pero-Pero. Kaido then comments how he does now
"Girl Stories." He then forces the letters away from her to prove her
wrong, and that it isn't safe for her to think some guy is sending her
letters saying "We Will Meet." Suddenly, as she struggles them out of his
hands she notices a man standing outside the window, who looks like
her Pero-Pero.

Later, Utena's Aunt returns come and comments that she is now
allowed to wear the uniform, but it may not be long, for Yurika explains she's only allowed
to wear it because she is going to Amsterdam for her work, and wishes to take Utena with her.
Utena, of course, knows she'll meet PeroPero soon, and does not want to leave.

Later, she talks to Kaido who has found little proof that her aunt has been
sending the letters. They are stamped from the same place her Aunt works at.
Utena seems depressed about this.. wondering if he was really fake.

Later that night, Aunt Yurika comes home and brings a friend in. The same
man Utena saw from the window, Wakaouji Aoi. Yurika then asks Utena to
get some tea ready while Yurika changes. Wakaouji and Utena get into
some small talk, as Utena wonders why he has the same ring she does.
Utena then questions why he was outside, knowing he wasn't just admiring her
rose garden. Suddenly, Yurika runs out "Oh! The vase!" Sudden a clash from outside.
Yurika and Wakaouji run out and grab the precious rose and save it. Utena
truly thinks this is the man she's been thinking and dreaming of.

The next day, Kaido notices that Utena is unusually extra happy, and comments
she met her Pero-Pero. Utena tells him what happened, and Kaido thinks
he's some pervert. She found out the ring is from his school days,
an award for being an excellent student. Utena comments that he said
she wanted to meet him before going to Amsterdam. Kaido then
realizes "Amsterdam?!" and Utena explains as they go see Wakaouji.
Suddenly, they see him talking to Yurika, wanting to go to Amsterdam
with her.. because he loves her. Utena runs out crying, and Kaido runs after her.

Utena, now at the same spot she met her Pero Pero-kun, she wonders.. then
suddenly she hears a little girl crying for her mother. A little
girl just like her, who lost family.. suddenly the girl skips and falls, and
Utena jets forward and grabs the girl, falling in herself. Kaido runs up, and
sees the little girl hugging her father. He looks around for Utena.. and suddenly
sees her in the arms of a tall man, gently laying her down on the ground.
He asks himself, "Is that him..?"

Utena then wakes up, asking where she is.. she questions Kaido
if he saved her, and depressingly he said ":If I did, would you love me
like you do Pero Pero?" Utena questions why he said that. Utena replies,
saying it wasn't because he saved her life, that she feel for him.
It was because he gave her something.. Strength. Kaido tells her
that Wakaouji was not her Prince, and he doesn't exist. Kaido explains
what he saw was like a dream, that he couldn't even see who saved her.

Later, Yurika apologizes to Utena and Utena waves it off, saying
she'd like to live with both her and Wakaouji. Kaido then admits
he lied about the letters. He then then tells her that the messages
on the post cards are not important, but the pictures on the back are.
They go together, and form something that looks like a foreign scenery,
But if you add the recent post card, it's the famous Private School. "Ohtori Academy."
Located in the city of Hou-ou. The very same school that Wakaouji-san came from.

"I lied to you, Utena. I really did find something out when I investigated the letters,
and...since you're going away so soon, I should tell you the truth.
These postcards are the kind with a message on one side, and a photograph on the other.
But what's important is not the message, but the picture.
At first they just look like foreign scenery, but...if you add the card that came this year to the other
six...it's just like a puzzle that comes together to form a picture of a real place: the private school,
Ohtori Academy. It's a famous school in the city of Hou-ou. The same school Wakaouji-san came from.

Explanations and Changes from the Animation - Spoilers!!

The Utena manga takes pretty much the same storyline that the Utena T.V. Series runs. A little more detail is given in the manga, as well as where Utena came from before Ohtori (See prologue above.) One of the details given is the location of Ohtori Academy. The name on the area is called Hou-ou, this means he/she. It also means Phoenix, as in dying and reviving from it's ashes. In more detail, Hou-ou is another name for the Chinese God Animal Suzaku. (Fushigi Yuugi fans will know who this is definitely) Suzaku is the god of the Southern part of the world (or southern part of a Continents, like Asia. Or even just the southern part of a Country, like Japan.) Hou-ou is the Japanese name for Suzaku, so this may then that Ohtori is located somewhere in southern Japan. (Wow, you'd be surprised what Anime can teach you. ^.^)

A large difference, that was a disappointment to alot, is the character Juri. In the series she is much darker, and is also attracted to women it seems. In the manga, she seems (according to everyone else.) she is in love with Touga. Instead of fighting for the power to prove miracles wrong, she's fighting for Touga. Of course, I don't like that near as much as I do in the series. Miki is also a small change but nothing to different. Touga also seems to actually fall for Utena, and becomes concerned for her.

The final battle between The World's End and Utena ends with something close to the T.V. series end. Akio and Dios where once one, but was one body yet two halves. A Dios of Light and a Dios of  Dark. The Dios of Light was one who helped mankind.. but when man asked to much of the Dios of Light, the other side took over, then banishing the Dios of Light outside their body, The Dios of Dark took over and became the World's End. When Dios of Light was falling, he happened to find a young girl falling as well, and decided that this blurry-eyed girl would would need the last of his power.. his courage, strength, and his heart. When Utena fought Akio, the World's End, in the final fight for revolution, Utena decided the best choice for the world would be to return Dios to his former body so the two become one.

Anthy, herself wishing to be the new Prince leaves to seek out Utena while Touga is the only one in the school who remembers the events of the Rose Duels.

The two side stories, the first one featuring the Ruka storyline and the second featuring the Black Rose Storyline respectively as close to the animated versions.

Anyone who is an avid fan of Utena should really consider picking these books up.
